senses

i am playing along with the weekly senses photo feature from Mary Catherine’s blog this week.

i am a dreamer. i think big and dream bigger. the problem with this is that i find myself not being satisfied in whatever moment i’m in. i’m living in the future or the past too much. i feel that focusing on this photo exercise put some perspective in my day: if i’m experiencing something nice pertaining to all 5 of my senses in one day then i’m doing alright. i have it pretty good no matter what my ambitions are telling me. I was able to find all these little gratitudes in a span of about 60 minutes:

^^^smell^^^

i’ve been making more of an effort to thoroughly use our fruits and veggies before tossing in the compost. the smell of grapefruit after scrubbing the sink with the leftover peel and the smell of fresh veggie stock helped me connect to our blessings in the nourishment department. (yeah, the pot boiled over. so much for the morning stove wipedown.)

cream photo cream_zps3c5e1a4e.jpg

^^^taste^^^

darla and i have a little ritual of scooping out the cream from the top of our freshly opened milk jugs. we get them every other week so it’s a treat to each have a spoonful once in a while. the taste of this week’s spoonful helped me connect to this small part of our life that i hope darla will remember when she is older. just she and her mama sharing fresh cream and feeling it’s a treat every single time.

^^^touch^^^

a touch of warmth is back in the sunshine. so that means it is real sunshine now. the kind that you can feel warm your skin. you can see my pasty white skin drinking in the vitamin d. the feeling of warmth connected me to the promise of springtime and brighter days to come.

^^^sight^^^

the fiendish look of accomplishment my girl makes when she’s sneaked a treat. it’s impossible for me to be irked by her cookiesnatching ways. the sight of this smile makes me grateful time and again.

^^^sounds^^^

this one was a given. mike won tickets to Father John Misty & The Walkmen this week. it has been quite a drought since my last concert so i was feeling very thankful to get back to some live music. also, i am grateful to have a husband that has calling in to radio stations to win tickets down to a science. i missed most of father john misty due to a birthworkers meeting but made it just in time for 2 of my favorite songs so it was ok. have a listen to my fave above.

that’s all friends. hope you continue to have a grand weekend!!!! xoxoxoxo

weekending

other than seeing A Birth Story, my weekend was pretty much contained in my household. i am fine with this because it grossly rained all weekend. i did attend another kickbutt boot camp that has left me sore even today. this is good. sore is the new sexy. pinterest told me that. a few projects from the weekend:
food colorwatermelonmixer

headbands

1.  a food color and coffee filter bunting project hubster and darla came up with  2.  more water infusions. i’ve been experimenting and so far i like cucumber and watermelon the best. wonderfully delicious  3. bread baking attempts. it’s taken me a year to make good on my bread baking resolution but i’m getting in the swing of it. my yeast creations { yes, i just said that } need help, though. anyone have any good recipes?  4.  a little project i’m working on for an upcoming weekend.

yeah, that’s pretty much it other than lots of pretending to be harry potter and dance parties.

thanks for catching up with us.

weeksie

i felt kinda like getting back to posting some weekly familyness shots. i really miss so many of you friends and i’m sorry i don’t get my correspondence on as often as i’d like. just view our lives broadcasted on the interwebs instead of getting a call form me like normal. right? sarcasm but sadly true. sorry. here’s a bit of our week:

wall

1.  mountain instrument concert  2. someone can’t take a bath unless it has food coloring in it. blue bath.  3. two-headed dimple monster  4. mike made some really rad puppets. #hidden talents  5 & 6. a gifted Grumpy Doodle Book saved us at lunchtime. 7. I figure that since the placement of this sign was in an alley { an alley that transports you to a whole different city, beeteedubs } it’s actually referring to heroin instead of refuse. tax dollars well spent.

wishing you a splendid weekend. go get a little funky.

snow eater

ice eater

will someone please explain to me why i have to force feed my child meals like pancakes with syrup but she wants to eat icicles and snow balls the entirety of the time we are outside. does she not understand it’s just frozen water? dirty frozen water? i’ve tried to intervene but when mike made a snowman darla’s first reaction was to start gnawing on his midsection. it’s weird and i think it’s here to stay…at least for this snowfall. luckily she knows about yellow snow. she pointed some out and said “that means pee.” whew…

do you have a snow eater? try this: i made hot chocolate and then we poured it over snowballs { from fresh snow } and dropped in some smaller snowballs. it was actually pretty fun. i recommend it for those of you who have the if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em attitude.

babies sleep through meals in a restaurant. almost-4-year-olds do not. they might sleep on the way into them, though. hubster and i took darla to a quite a number of dinners-out when she was a babe. we just did some babywearing and she slept the whole time! i can’t even believe that i once thought toting her along was so much work. we haven’t been doing the restaurant thing very much lately for several reasons but one being that darla is pretty hard to contain these days. it was nice to get back to an old favorite even if darla did wake up at the table and turn the table place card holders into a set of cymbals.

oh. well.

birthday

we had a birthday celebration yesterday. can you tell which one of us was excited about it? jump

i really wish that pic had turned out clearer bc it was pretty great. darla was leaping over mike’s legs when we told her we’d do a backwards dinner: dessert first, dinner second. somehow, this worked. she ate more dinner than normal. but, i don’t think we’ll make it a regular thing.

a la mode

we had brownie rocky road a la mode.

darla and i gifted mike a custom, handmade leather belt fashioned by our friend, lance. it’s super sweet. so if anyone needs any leather work done…well, i know a guy.

happy birthday to all the december babies young and old :)

weekending

we had a pretty solid weekend around here: boot camp, successful prospective client meeting, our friend joe stayed with us, darla’s first school buddy birthday party, and family photos. and somehow i managed to get a lot done around the house. i love weekends like that.

soooo, working out makes it ok to eat whatever you want, right? burgers, pizza, biscuits and sausage gravy, ice cream and brown betty were all on my menu. i have a feeling it’s not going to get much better for the rest of the year. whatevs. we had some veggie curry and salad and stuff. i think it evens out. yeah.

mike love

i’m pretty excited about our family photos this year. looking forward to sending them out in a few weeks.

hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

weeksie

i’m writing this as a pretty tired momma on this afternoon. i know to be this tired means i have a lot to be thankful for…

or…

it could mean that burgers are really not a good lunch choice and my decision to attempt going meat and gluten free next year is valid.

anyways, snaps from a week in which there was a lot to be thankful:

north market jeni's pining
unicorn

thankful for delicious, delicious soft pretzel snacks at north market. equally thankful to have spotted the elusive, unenthusiastic unicorn while we were there.
ps. she did not get any jeni’s while we were there. shame really.

whipped cream games

thankful for games and hot chocolate at luck bros to make up for the missed jeni’s opportunity.

spiral

thankful for one more week of play opportunity outside

braids

and lastly, i’m thankful to be the one to plait these beautiful braids. even if the subject is quite squirmy and they come out crooked. i’m glad to be the one to do it.

donut chef

you might have guessed that we were obama people over here. we set off for a celebratory breakfast the morn of nov 7.

we’ve been reading a book that darla digs hard core called The Donut Chef this past week. she asked me what it meant when a donut is “glazed” and i was all “oh i will show you.” so we used nov 7 as an excuse to go get us some glaze at our favorite donut spot. seriously they are amazing. they have a breakfast sandwich on a donut and it’s phenom. phenom i tell ya.
