“it’s totalary magical and you get to believe it”

california has been a whirlwind of wonderful activities, so far, and it is thoroughly kicking my butt. yesterday we took the girls to Disneyland. It was darla’s first time in an amusement park. she was amused. here’s just a bit of the day:

well, what can i say about the day? thanks to the precision science the buzzker family has perfected of amusement park going, we thoroughly covered the parks. Our coined phrase was “thrilled to the max.” Darla was pretty enthused about her first trip to disneyland.

i hadn’t been on a rollercoaster since before darla was born and it was soooo good. i have this, ummm, we’ll call it a “condition” where i just start laughing uncontrollably on rides. it’s prominent in the teacup video if anyone wants to hear. i’m sorry that the audio in that is just me laughing hysterically. being whirled through space just makes me astoundingly giddy, i guess.

hubster, i soooo wished you could have been there. i wish you could be here for the whole trip. in the words of elsa bun as she was preparing d for the disney experience:

“IT’S TOTALARY MAGICAL AND YOU GET TO BELIEVE IT!”

yes, it totalary was.

ummm i have to do THAT again in 9 days???

ok. WOW. i thought flying with darla yesterday would be a piece of cake since it was about her 12th round trip flight but it was quite a test in patience. i basically told my friends to keep my child away from me for at least an hour so i could reprogram and get myself back to a good mommy place. that wasn’t really a problem since elsa and darla revolved in their own world for most of the night, just happy to be together.

i won’t bore everyone with details but it went a lot like this: i bought darla a muffin for breakfast. it was a very crumbly muffin. darla bit right into the center and then basically the whole thing crumbled into two pieces and fell on the ground. freaking $4 airport muffin. Then at lunch all she requested was a banana. She unpeeled the banana and proceeded to bite right into a big brown spot and then the banana split in two pieces and fell on the ground. freaking $1.75 airport banana.

it wasn’t all bad. it’s pretty endearing to see your child charging her way through the airport towards her bestie. darla said she would race me to be the first one to see elsa. as she sped past me on the ramp she turned around and shouted “i tooted at you to slow you down!”  she did, in fact, get to be the first one to elsa. their reunion was the thing nickelodeon movies are made of. i mean, it amused the lead singer of linkin park, who was coincidentally in the airport because of some nickelodeon awards event this weekend.

it was all worth it to see these two together again. I am SO happy to be here.

I packed my bags last night pre-flight

i’m sitting here with a to-do list of which only about half will get done by the time we have to get on the plane for california tomorrow morning.

yeah, that’s right. once i said that in my brain i thought “the hell with it, i’m going to california tomorrow! i don’t have to do it if i don’t wanna.” so i went downstairs and made myself a cocktail instead.

here’s to 10 days with friends, and sunshine and new scenery. annnnnd here’s to putting things off for a good reason. clink. clink. i just cheersed myself. and made up the word cheersed. see i’ve been so much more productive after this drink.

ps. cali friends we’re so excited to squeeze you. columbus friends we’re excited to squeeze you when we get back, too. oh gosh, and everyone everywhere else we’ll be excited to see you and squeeze you when we get to see and squeeze you. there. did i cover everyone? no one offended? good. ‘night y’all!

friday smiles

we’re finishing up a very good week here and looking forward to an equally good weekend. some things that have made me smile around here today:

our flowers of the week darla picked out

IMG_2108

watching darla excitedly tear open her invitation to be a flower girl in cousin’s wedding. she’s pretty jazzed.

IMG_2107watching a girl figure out things for herself successfully.

IMG_2109

finally getting around to baking this super easy bread. mixed, proofed and baked all in one pot. sooo delicious.

IMG_2111

playing dumb so darla can have the joy of the “see food” joke multiple times over.

IMG_2110

seeing a practical joke gift received well and messages from friends :)

i’m also thankful for about 4 going on 5 hours of the girl being happy to play and occupy herself while i sort through summer plans, bills and responsibilities that have been neglected. maybe this is my reward for putting aside my duties and crying my way through The Rescuers with her last night.

but mostly i’m smiling about the concert tickets purchase, the friends we’ll be festivaling with, and the family with which i get to spend traveling around this country for one crazy upcoming summer.

F-R-I-D-A-Y! WHAT’S THAT SPELL? FRIDAY!!! commence banging on the side of the bus.

hiatus

hi friends,

how was your christmas? merry? jolly? bright? white?

i hope any combination of all of the above.

all was well here. busy busy hectic and busy. but ohhhh so much fun. christmas continues for the tucker half of my family. we’re currently “christmasing” at the abe martin lodge in brown county indiana. the setting is pretty ideal at the moment.

i’m typing next to a crackling fire. the view outside the windows is of snow covered trees and cabins. the lodge is decked out in holiday decor and rustic, natural adornments. kids are running around, families are playing board games in the game lobby. the kitchen is churning out wonderful homestyle food. my child is asleep and i’m enjoying some peace on the internet with my father here by the fire.

maybe that last sentence didn’t fit in with the rest of the painted picture but did you hear me? MY CHILD IS ASLEEP. she’s been very rambunctious due to the lax environment the holidays have created and she’s taking her first nap in what seems like weeks. so i’m catching up on some things on the interwebs by this here fire while i shove my face full of stocking stuffed jelly beans.

semi-quiet solitude: it’s the best christmas gift yet…

ps. i have lots of pics and memories to share from our holiday celebrations but i’ll update on those soon. i’m trying my best to stay present with family time and disengaged from technology. present moments excluded.

cincinnati or bust???

here’s our day:

all three key players loaded into car. only one of us has egg on her face: success!

arrive at beautiful cincinnati museum center: success!

take in some architectural elements: success!

explored exhibits: success!

deliciousness at our lunch spot discovery servatii: success!

and, as always, a little silliness: success!

i’m reminding myself of the successes of the day b/c a good portion of the second half was a total bust. no rest for the weary girl. no rest for the weary parents. behavior issues from toddler caused behavior issues from parents. okay, just from me. and why does she insist on having a full force surge of independence show down every single time we’re in a parking lot? it’s all trivial stuff in the long run but by the end of the day i wanted to bang my head against the backseat window. oh yeah, did i mention i had to ride smushed in the backseat with wild child while the ikea purchase took up most of the room in the car? i’m sorry to complain but i’m trying to poke fun at the chaos more than anything. also it’s my writing so ICanDoWhatIWant!

despite the pitfalls, we discussed with jubilant enthusiasm (jubilant i tell you!) returning another day and time. we only scratched the surface of all that the cincinnati children’s museum has to offer. and with our reciprocal museum membership we have no excuses.

los angeles lied to me

los angeles told me that it was always sunny and balmy. los angeles told me my friends are right around the corner and ready to meet up for decadent dinners and uniquely concocted cocktails on a daily basis. los angeles told me i could sleep in until 10 every day if i wanted to. it also said i could shop constantly and not worry one bit about my credit card bill.

all of those things became sweet nothings once my plane touched down in indianapolis.

these things happened on my sabbatical: shopping, food, friends, laughs, sun, shoppping, drinks, sightseeing, ocean breezes, more shopping, more food, delicious food, oh-my-god the food, walks, rest, snuggles, friends, new friends and missing my little mini-me.

it was just what i needed and i can’t thank enough all the dear friends who took time out to meet up, catch up, and house me. this trip was just what i needed. i’m always very bad about taking a moment away to take pictures when it comes to myself. here’s the tiny, tiny amount i captured from the most optimistic city i’ve yet to encounter.

friends and sunshine on a venice beach bike ride

does a beautiful back deck make beautiful people more beautiful or vice versa? PeeR At THis PaiR OF PEErs ON thE PieR. my radical flight partner rode on the wing. i hope the stewardess’ didn’t take him down!

i’m already looking forward to planning another trip out to la la with little da-la. also looking forward to planning my next adventure. where should we travel next? where will you travel next?

cheers to adventures dreamed by you and by me.

Dear Salty Sailor,

hello, love. i’ve gone to california on a big jet plane. i’m sending this off to you west coast time and sorry if i don’t get to post very much the rest of the weekend. i wanna try to stay a little detached from the computer and so much has happened already this week that i think a separate cali post will be in order.

i’m so excited for some west coast friend time! but i already miss darla. and i miss you. our family really needs to spend some time exploring california. and the rest of the country. and the world. mmkay.

this week’s edition of Darla says:

“You’re the mustard and I’m the hotdog, mom.” in reference to her hot dog tee she wore that day.

Staring wistfully at the ceiling, she said “I wish i was a smoke detector.”

whilst riding in the car she started on a ramble and I tuned out. But once it was apparent that she wasn’t talking to me I tuned back in( I know it should be reversed but sometimes that’s how I do). She was recounting her incident at firefly when she fell out of the bounce house, “and then I bounced myself so high I bounced right out of the bounce house. I fell really hard and hurt my head. It was the worst day of my life.” I started cracking up and asked her who she was talking to and she said “the crickets.”

while painting she said “this painting is really good arting.”

at the apple orchard i had to put a wristband on her so the place could keep track of who paid. when i affixed it to her she said “oh yeah, i love that kinda thang!” in this twangy southern accent.

bridget was doing yoga and while she was in downward dog bridget asked “darla what am i doing right now.” darla replied “dog standing.”

we had a kinda of challenging trip to the short north. darla didn’t want to hold hands with either of us so i was giving her a talkdown that she would need to either hold hands or else be carried. she very calmly clasped both her hands together in front of her and walked in a perfectly straight line. cousin and i both burst out laughing and i let her go ahead and walk herself down the street b/c that was a pretty smart move on her part. we moved on to basil for dinner. she got thai sauce all over her hands, and face and everywhere. even on my back. i was sticking to the booth. she looked at her hands and said “i have sticky hands. i’m a tree frog. i’m a one-eyed tree frog.” she then proceeded to stare her one-eye over the top of the booth at a couple having a full on make out sesh on their date. i was trying to get her to sit down and be calm and she started pushing up against me and saying “mom, i need my tiiiiiiiime!” needless to say we tried to make a hasty exit.

on to some pics. it’s the prettiest autumn i can remember so you can expect lots of pituresque fall scenes from us in the next few weeks. then it won’t be long before you’re home! only a month to go. it’s amazing to me sometimes to think i’ve finally gotten so used to this that a month without you doesn’t seem like such a long time.

we’ve been doing a lot of funny faces for our meal times. darla realy digs it.

that’s all for now my bearded beau. sending you some extra love since now it has to travel an extra 2244 miles. or maybe it will be smart and turn around and go the other direction. hmmm. well i’ll let you figure out the love path since YOU’RE the navigational expert.

loving you,

wife former fwife

I’m off!!!

I’m off duty for five days and off to california for reunions galore!

20111013-071453.jpg

You’ll notice a lack of auntie anne’s pretzel in the above photo. The indianapolis airport did away with my hookup! How can an airport NOT have auntie anne’s? I am nonplussed.

In other airport news – cousin, you will appreciate – I asked the internal scan guy if he would make sure everything looks like it is working all right in there and he sternly replied “security is no joke, ma’am.” sheesh. Airport – 2 Elaine – 0.

But I’m on my way to awesome times with people I love so no matter what the score I STILL WIN. Also, I realize i was whineypants about the pretzels. white whine. Sorry.
