smooooooothies!!! i’m in love with smoothies!!!

at first i was going to leave some recipes in this space but really who needs a recipe for a smoothie?

instead i thought i would include some of the bonus ingredients i include in my fruit smoothies and why. then you can experiment on your own. or not. you could just be way over-informed about my digestive habits. your choice.

spinach: rich in vitamin c, folic acid and helps your body regulate blood sugar

avocados: loads of healthy fats, protein, B vitamins, vitamin C, E & K

coconut milk: good fats, loads of vitamins & minerals including calcium, magnesium and iron.

flaxseed meal: high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids

nut butter: adds protein and good fats, and it tastes good.

that’s all i have for now. what do you put in your smoothies?

journaling the maternal experience

at a recent appointment with our midwives i discussed trying to find the balance between being connected to this birth and being controlling. with darla’s birth i believed that everything would be ok and all would be well, as nature intended. well, that’s actually a pretty good way to head into your first birth since things did end up pretty well. but i don’t feel like i really connected to my pregnancy with her ahead of time. i feel much more spiritually involved with this little one. however, i’m also feeling more aware of the possibilities of things that *could* go wrong and i’m having a harder time disconnecting from those thoughts. that ignorant bliss goes right out the window with naiveté once you’ve been doing birthwork for a while. it’s given me a lot of empathy for medical professionals given the fact that the majority of the births i’ve seen have been peaceful and natural.

so i decided journaling the rest of this pregnancy would be a good thing for me. i feel i’ve been involved with this pregnancy at a more heightened level and i need to make sure that continues to come from a good place and not a place of fear. because i do believe this natural act my body, baby and self are to perform in a few months will be lovely and healthy. i might just need a place to write that down daily as a reminder. and i believe that when actions are motivated by fear then they secondarily become motivated by control. i don’t need to control this life event. i need to experience it. i need to cling firmly to the faith that all will be normal, healthy and safe, as intended.

i have a few other things i’ve been practicing and/or plan on incorporating into birth prep that i’ll share here in time.  because having faith in the process doesn’t absolve me from doing work on my end to nourish my body, mind and baby. please stay tuned for future pregnancy work updates!

this girl

i feel that the blog has been pretty pregnancy-centric lately. After 4 years of this space being devoted almost entirely to darla-doings i’m sure it’s a bit weird that i’ve not included much about her on here as of late.

just to be clear, she’s still my main girl, my mostly companion.

what can i say about this girl? she’s still running around my life as crazy as ever. but i have a good feeling about the spacing of these two children. D is really into helping and doing at this stage. she has a new chore-helper chart that she has really taken on with gusto. she likes feeling like part of the team and she is always willing to provide a hand if i need it. and boy am i going to need it here in a few months.

but mostly she is just so wildly independent. sometimes it can feel like hours have gone by where i haven’t seen her bc she’s got some project going on for herself.  i spend a lot of time wondering if this next babe is going to be as independent as his/her sister. hard to say. darla’s that way partly by nature and partly because mike and i try to take a firm parenting stance that we will help her with the things that she actually needs help with {all sharp objects} but not the things she can absolutely do for herself {like put on her socks and shoes. or wipe her own butt.} because doing things for her is ultimately very unhelpful, right? she’s not afraid to try to figure something out for herself, which i admire and hope she keeps. and she frequently tells us that she knows everything before it even happens so she has all the answers in life. ha.

well, y’all, wish me luck with that independence with this second one comes along. please send good vibes that it will be a helpful thing and not a headache thing, like darla taking a nursing session as an opportunity to try to ride her bike down the street by herself for the first time. or to cut her hair by herself…which is coming up a lot in talks lately. even though that wouldn’t be the worse thing in the world and i would kinda like to let her just rock whatever haircut she thinks looks best on her. anyway, please just send good vibes that her independent involvement with sharp and cutting objects is minimal when my attention has to be divided.

but i think all is going to be well because she’s my little bud. she’s my main girl.

and she’s going off to school come fall anyway so momma has a break. but that’s a story for another post.

i don’t know if i’ve been hit by spring cleaning fever or if nesting urges are kicking in hard-core but things are happening around here. maybe these two naturally occurring phenomena are fusing together to make one crafty superpower in this momma. anyone else experiencing this?

i’m not normally much of a “maker” but i’ve been taken over by an urge to make our space over a little bit, to pour a touch more of myself into everything. i believe that pregnancy is a naturally creative time for women. we are literally creating life. compared to that a few little household projects seem like a cinch. this week we repotted some plants, took on some baby projects and started our seeds.

what are you going to take on this weekend?

sending lots of positive vibes out there to you for your to-do lists and purge piles!

a nice, colorful, leafy green salad is almost a daily for me. as i said to my husbeau when he was just my beau “i like fruit in my salads but not fruit salads.”

since our california trip i’ve been loving another ingredient in my salad… ^^^quinoa!^^^ here’s my unrecipe for family size quinoa salad:

prepare 1/2 cup quinoa, let cool.

start with 3-4 cups of spinach, or if you’re like me just use the whole bag/plastic container

+ dump the cooled quinoa right in the center

+ all the halved cherry tomatoes your heart desires

+ copious amounts of goat cheese

+ thinly sliced carrots for crunch

+ sliced almonds

it is of my opinion that this salad could entertain radishes and any type of berry in the future.

top with fresh honey dijon lemon dressing:

start with juice from 2 freshly squeezed lemons

+ 1 tsp dijon mustard

+ a couple squirts of honey depending on your own taste preferences. i’m just being real. no one measures honey.

+ salt and pepper

mix together thoroughly. then add 2 parts olive oil to match your one part juice concoction. shake and pour liberally!

my preference is to use a lot of dressing and let it sit on it a bit so the quinoa gets nice and soaked in it.

bonus** if you’re a quinoa lover you should also try this recipe!

ps. quinoa is great to buy in bulk at your nearest bulk goods section or here.
