why’s it all cold again and stuff?

today we had little pellets of sleet punctuating our car ride conversations. it’s hard to believe that just days ago it was in the 70s. i’m posting some more of our sunny pics to help me remember.

monkey bars. i know it looks like she’s in distress but she was loving it. trust me.

counting pine cones and if this picture had audio you would hear the nature lecture i was receiving about the pine nuts inside that birds, squirrels and humans really enjoy. love her.

who’s ready to skip march and head straight on to april? anyone?

sunshiny week

we had a very sunshiny week, which was nice for a change. we’re just itching for more of the great outdoors.

and we spent a few days with our burkeybuns friends. it can get pretty hectic with 3 kids but moments like these are more frequent than one might think.

IMG_2038darla and adam were so excited when joni woke up from her nap they decided to climb right in her bed with her. it was so sweet.

i love seeing all three kids able to share toys and activities now.

IMG_2050

some other fun. look at all those conjoined darlas! it makes me happy and nervous. this photo was created with a real kaleidoscope. no iphone apps were harmed in the making of this photo.

IMG_2049

what else about our week? hmmm.

i gave darla her first haircut. i never thought i’d be one of those moms, but i saved her hair. i just couldn’t throw it away right after. it now looks like i have a little shrew hibernating in my jewelry box. i’m sure i’ll throw it away in a couple of weeks, or sprinkle it on our garden when we start the process in march. jeez, these softy sides sneak up on me every now and again.

i’ve remembered why i stopped participating in lenten activities: BECAUSE GIVING UP THINGS IS STUPID! i’ve had a much harder time than i thought avoiding the sweets. i hadn’t realized how much i was indulging until now. i ate TWO gummy vitamins the other day because that is the closest i can get to real candy. i feel like a crack addict trying to figure out how i’m going to secretly score. is that what crack addicts call it? scoring? i don’t know yet. breaking bad is my next tv series on netflix, so i’ll find out then. not surprisingly, my body is already feeling healthier. from the lack of candy, not the crack. oh geez.

the last exciting thing is that darla and i came over for a nice long weekend visit with my family and also for me to consult with one of my lifelong friends about being her doula! i’m so excited to be back on track and a step closer to my certification. i love talking to couples about their birth choices. my friend and her husband are going to be great parents and it seems like they also have a great outlook heading into their labor and delivery. i’m just happy to be a part of these events and so thankful.  the next seven weeks will consist of a lot of review of my birthing materials and prep.  I REALLY CAN’T WAIT UNTIL MORE OF YOU LET ME BE YOUR DOULA.

it was a good week for us. now we’re just enjoying our weekending. hope you are too.

weekending 3.0

we had a really good weekend here despite someone throwing up in her carseat and having a bit of a bug. not too many pictures because i was too busy running a house and cuddling a girl.

1. lots of fun things in the saturday post

IMG_2008

2. you wanna take your umbrella in the shower? sure thang. let’s do this.

lots of other good goings-on this weekend. girlfriend dinner dates, mommy + daughter movie morning to see The Secret World of Arietty, vidyo skype from salty sailor man, kids-eat-free night with family – although this one resulted in a pretty nice shiner for darla when she ran into a table cause she wasn’t looking where she was going – ladyfriend scoring a pair of tix for us to go see the Black Keys in a coupla weekends, darla requesting to watch The Triplets of Belleville umpteen times.

yes, there is a lot in life to be happy about.

some things happened this week over which i had no control

IMG_1973IMG_1975

IMG_1974

IMG_1972

ok, a lot of things happened that i had no control over but most of the time i like to keep myself in denial.  fun with packing peanuts and markers created a little more work for me this week but it was worth it. clearly. also, being the mom of the kid who wouldn’t climb out of the washing machine in the library was pretty awesome. sometimes it’s just whatever gets us through the day.

i think letting go of the control has been the pardest hart (reverse that) of parenting for me. it’s something i have to work on everyday in my parenting and other areas of life. it’s all a work in progress, right? RIGHT?

also, i definitely was NOT in control when that whole bag of doritos disappeared into my belly.

snow day play

a sick girl can still go out and enjoy the snow.

IMG_1793

i was so thankful to wake up and see the snow this morning. for one, it meant i had a good excuse to make a baked good for breakfast. two, i haven’t been able to take darla out to play in the snow all winter. why? because we’ve had none. we had a good time watching the big kids run around for recess.

darla’s favorite activity:

IMG_1803

being pushed in the swing while yelling “snowball” repeatedly. yep. love it.

last week i…

did some things that were NOT birthday related.

IMG_1690

we finally got the girl out of the house more. we ended up at firefly one day and it turns out firefly now has sing-a-longs. it was great fun watching the kiddos jump in front of the microphone. here’s darla’s turn, where she stood in front of the mic and looked proud but did not sing one syllable of the song. maybe she’ll get it the next time….

IMG_1691

did some puzzles, mostly by myself. darla does not like puzzles for some reason. she likes dumping them, turning them over and sorting but not putting them back together. more for me i guess.

IMG_1704IMG_1707

i found the perfect set of sheets for the tent bed at salvation army. i tried to encourage a tea party in said tent but, alas, that required too much sitting still in one spot for my girl.

IMG_1705

i got darla a shake on her last day of being 2. just because.

IMG_1700IMG_1698

triple reused brown bags to celebrate aunt colleen’s birthday. these bags were from our take out lunch, turned art project for daddy + darla, turned last minute wrapping paper idea for auntie’s 30th birthday gifts. after that we were satisfied with tossing in the recycling bin.

and that’s a wrap on last week. bye!

birthday morning

a few snaps of the birthday morning:

birthdayness

IMG_1717thank you hugs and kisses all around for bday presents

we’ve had a good morning complete with family visits, CRUMBelievable pancakes (pancakes with sausage crumbles baked inside. mmmm mmmm), presents and orange soda pop. Three is starting off pretty fantastic.

thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes coming miss darla’s way!

last day as a 2 year old

today is darla’s last day as a two year old. ( i double checked. sometimes the days can get lost around here.) this morning i asked her to draw two pictures. The first is of all the things she did as a two year old. The second is of all the things she’s going to do as a three year old. here is her artistic interpretation with some commentary:

IMG_1701

My Life as a Two Year Old by Darla Marie Wright

“i runned away a lot. then i ran in circles. small ones first. then i bumped my head on the table and all my hair fell off. then i joined the circus!!!!!”

IMG_1702

What I Will Do When I Am Three by Darla Marie Wright

“I will walk down the street by myself. and run in circles.”

well, now we know what to expect.

tent bedz

when i was a little girl i had a tent bed. a nice pink one that attached to my bed and made it look like a house. i felt so important when i could zip up the door myself. practically speaking, it also kept me from falling out in the middle of the night. i thought, for a while, about hunting down that tent bed for darla but then started dreaming up a simpler way that we could do the tent bed on our own.

here’s what we came up with:

IMG_1692

we found some decorative ceiling hooks that were guaranteed to hold up to 90 lbs, – you know, for when child decides to try and zip line her tent bed – affixed them to the wall, tied some clothesline between the two, and threw some blankets over it…

IMG_1693

Voila! Tent Beeeeeeeeddddd!!! and this way i can change up the sheets that are used and even take it down when need be – you know, as a time out measure when the child tries to zip line her tent bed.

IMG_1696

some extra book reading has been the result. mostly because i don’t want to get out of it either.

IMG_1695

suffice to say, the girl enjoys her tent bed.

makeupz

darla snuck away one morning during mike’s surprise birthday visit and got into susanna’s make up. because she’s awesome, susanna took pictures instead of getting upset.

darla then decided to paint our bedsheets with make up. it didn’t come out in the wash. womp womp. oh well. it was worth it. i mean, just look at that face…
