spring tradition
so here’s the thing about me: i like fantastical creatures. Faeries, mermaids, dragons, imps, gnomes, hobbits, especially hobbits. you get the drift? when a friend tipped me off to the story behind our little Root Children print i decided to start a new spring time tradition with darla. and i think it might become more fun for me than for her because it means i get to drag her further into my world of make believe – i really do believe mermaids are out there. somewhere. waiting for me.
on March 20 darla is going to get a visit from the root children. i’m looking forward to putting together little surprises for her to find on the first day of spring left behind by these bug-sized heralds of the vernal equinox. she enjoyed the st. nicholas’ day surprises so much so i’m sure this addition to our holiday calendars will be a hit, too.
the first step to this plan required the purchase of the Story of the Root Children by Sibylle Von Olfers on amazon. i am so excited to read this book to darla the week leading up to spring. actually it will probably be read to her before then but my plan is to read it every night the week leading up to march 20.
we all know that amazon then refers us to other books we may like once we put something in our basket, and that’s when i fell down the rabbit hole. i ended up purchasing quite a few books written by both Sibylle Von Olfers and Elsa Beskow. why did i purchase so many? because they are beautifully illustrated stories of elves, gnomes, fairies, and i think maybe even a magical fox. A MAGICAL FOX! how could I not purchase them.
because that’s all i really require to get me spending the money. just included some mythical creature and i’m on it.
stocking stuffers
darla’s been into stamping lately so i decided quirky little stamps would be a good stuffer this year. etsy is of course my go to place but i’ll still need to see what i can find when i hit up the craft shop. i found this cuuuuute little set on JFlairHomestyles etsy. i thought the prices were pretty reasonable given then number of pieces in each set and quality. now i’m in search of some fun inks. shopping. weeeee!
per request
here’s a pic of the sheep coat. ta-da!!!
it’s quite warm. i purchased this woolly number in wilmington, north carolina, which was climatologically odd, but it was love at first sight. the shop, edge of urge, had a tantalizingly unique shoe collection. they seemed to have every jeffrey campbell shoe available in stock. i also obsessed over their melissa shoes for about 4 days but got over it because i couldn’t rationalize spending 80 bucks on a pair of jellies. i bought some jessica simpson platforms instead and all has been well since.
well……except for the time that i wore those platforms to walk darla and my cousin downtown and to the park and it was all a disaster and i don’t know why i thought wearing platforms to a park was a good idea… the jelly flats probably would have been better in that scenario.
hmmmm. what else?
because i’m in a sharing mood
here’s the girl’s excitement when we give her a tic tac. sometimes she’s easy to please.
*btw, PETA, i think it’s fake fur so don’t come after me with paint. thanks a mil.
stocking stuffers
well my reality check of yesterday has been cashed and i’m back to buying stuff and wanting more stuff. eh. i’ll work on my consumerism next year.
when i found this a few weeks ago i H-A-D to get it for someone, some three, some me, persons. will you be receiving this from me as a stocking stuffer? time will only tell….
i don’t know why i haven’t thought of gifting butter products before. if you know me, which you probs do, then it is obvious why i am picking BUTTER. it’s basically picking me.
but scratch under that shallow surface and there is also a better butter reason.
sorry, butter pun. couldn’t resist.
Butter’s nail polishes are all formulated without formaldehyde, toluene, and dbp, all of which are toxic chemicals. yeah, did you know formaldehyde is in your nail polish? the stuff they put on dead people to embalm them. darla likes to have her nails painted so i have picked up some non-toxic nail polish options just to feel a little bit better about the process. and i just generally like having non-toxic products on my body. just me though.
buuuut really it’s just the name that gets me. if it’s called butter chances are that i’ll buy it.
amazon’s got lots of selections for butter. some good colors here. here and here. you can still get it in plenty of time for christmas and definitely in time for new year’s parties. winky winky.
kinda kicking myself that i didn’t pick up this color as well. fail.
oh well. butter luck next time!
what a killah sense of humor…
saint nicholas feast day
we celebrated the feast day of saint nicholas with darla for the first time yesterday. it’s time for a little history lesson:
most of us 80s babies have been so far removed from the history of christmas that a lot of people don’t know that santa claus and many of our christmas traditions stem from a third century benefactor hailing from what is now modern day turkey. i found this website today and i have to say i’m digging the art by elizabeth jvanovsky.
to make a long story short, most countries celebrate the gift giving of st. nicholas on december 6th unlike in the u.s. where we simulate it on december 25th. the most common practice is for children to leave their shoes out for st. nicholas to stow treats and treasures inside.
this was always one of my favorite christmastime traditions in our household. my mother had little shoes from the netherlands that she would put out for me and i was always so excited to see what i would find the next morning. i think i was even more excited than christmas morning. well, probs not but st nic’s day always felt like a BONUS. i usually would have some candy, money and my commemorative christmas tree ornament for the year.
we’re not raising darla to be any specific religion but i thought keeping this little tradition in the mix was essential. i think the spirit of generosity was conveyed to me much more for st. nic’s feast day than christmas morning. i hope we’ll be able to teach darla the history behind the gift giving season and not just shoot her up with consumerism that is inescapable, even for myself.
anyway, i’d highly suggest adding st. nicholas feast day to your christmas traditions if you want to give a little extra push on the emphasis of charity and goodwill toward all. here’s darla’s feast day festivities:
darla received a pair of new toms from st. nicholas and a coordinating pair of socks. green corduroy with orange soles!!! ahhh they are too cute for words. there’s plenty of room to grow so i’m hoping we’ll get lots of use out of them to make the price sticker worth it. but i think it’s appropriate that st. nic brought her toms since a pair of shoes is donated to a child in need everytime a pair is purchased. st. nic would approve of that business model. maybe he’ll bring her a pair every year. also, the toms sticker is already on her bike helmet. BONUS.
i’m trying to get her a book every year to augment the collection passed down from my parents. Eloise at Christmastime was the only suitable option for this girl. she really, truly admires eloise and i think she and the little Plaza dweller have a lot in common. thanks again to fraunty amanda for introducing us to the world of Eloise.
we rounded it out with The Muppets Christmas Carol. this is my favorite version of the christmas carol. it is really just superb and does a great job following the verbage used by dickens. I admit this gift was really for me.
so far everything was a success. we read eloise, we watched our movie and she wore her new shoes all day. i’m thinking this girl will like st. nic’s feast day every year, too.

stocking stuffers
over the next few weeks, i thought i would share a few of the stocking stuffers that darla will be receiving come christmas day. the internet is for sharing ideas, right?
a new toothbrush to brush up after all those holiday sweets. i got darla’s new toothbrush from a company called Preserve. they make household products from recycled materials. i already use their razors, which are made from recycled yogurt cups, so i thought we’d give this little guy a try for darla’s hygiene needs.
i’m unnaturally excited about giving practical gifts, especially ones that promote loving mother earth.
