somehow 6 adults managed to keep a friend reunion from mike’s knowledge for his birthday surprise. currently enjoying good company and good coffee. it’s gonna be a good weekend.

before we move straight on to christmafying our lives…
the tree’s up at the wruckers but before i post those photos i wanted to make sure to share just a few more from our thanksgiving weekend. i feel sorry for turkey day sometimes, getting passed over pretty much, but then i think “hey, it’s thanksgiving’s own fault for not coming up with some catchy radio singles.”
1. coloring with grandma 2. she looks a little apprehensive about what’s at the bottom of that slide 3. jumpin’ in a pile of leaves 4. makes a gal happy 5. this is where i think i told mike to pretend we were drunk hobos at union station 6. best pretzels i’ve had in a long time at the flying saucer.
we had such a great weekend. a big thanks to mike’s parents for making the weekend special and comfortable. there’s a little girl here that’s already talking about coming back. and a big girl talking about it, too.
late night date night number two
michael arranged a pretty radical belated weddin’ anniversary celebration for us while in nashville. we really took advantage of the babysittin’ while there. oh, yeah, after bein’ down there for five days i’ve decided to drop all the “g”s in my vocabulary. thanks.
we stayed at the union station wyndham downtown and started with dinner and beers at the flyin’ saucer. the place has over 40 taps! the bar not the hotel. afterwards we walked down to broadway and stopped into a few honkey tonks before we finished the night singin’ karaoke in front of insanely talented strangers. we finally made our way back to base camp where i made mike sit with me in front of the fire. hey, i had wanted us to turn in on the early side but he made me rally so he had to pay the price by indulgin’ my fireside inclinations. here is our night in pictures, in no particular order. why? because i am freakin’ exhausted from NOT bein’ in bed by ten and now i’m too tired to arrange them. sorry.
i guess nashville causes us to make funny faces. also, the red photos have no filter on them. that’s just the red light special life at robert’s western world. it’s a western apparel shop with a bar inside = best idea i’ve ever head. all in all, this was a pretty great way to celebrate a year of marriage with a pretty great man.
spoiling the christmas surprise
i had planned on keeping this a surprise but i’m way, WAY too excited about what claudia has posted so far to keep mum any longer. we’ll just consider it another sneak peek.
here’s claudia’s work on our family christmas photo session thus far. she was pretty much the bees knees. i look forward to posting more of her work and more about spoonful records at a later date.

i wasn’t successful in getting any family photos taken. i wasn’t successful at much yesterday. just eating. and sleeping. sounds like a pretty good thanksgiving to me.
traveling tomfoolery
a narrative of pictures
here’s mikey’s first week home in pictures. we’ve been up to a lot lately. A LOT OF LOVE, that is.
watercolors with daddy. she has a hard time sticking to her own canvas. momma knows what you’re going through, darla. oh momma knows. i have a hard time with that too.

on to our coffee house breakfast. i call this one “darla with a butter packet.” gotta admit i don’t think this is gross. wonder where she gets it from?
love seeing that face over coffee
and there’s me. i’m seeing generations of genes on both sides in this picture.
there’s darla’s indignation after we took her 3rd tootsie roll away to be saved for later
this is why we buy in bulk
yes, she insisted on wearing her tutu to gymnastics. yes, she was very excited about that blow pop. a man at our dry cleaners gives her one every time we go in just because she’s cute. this didn’t really do much help with my “don’t take candy from strangers” lessons.
mike doing curls with darla inside our laundry bag. i swear she asks begs for this to happen. don’t call CPS
and now for lady date sequence:
my drink: the salty dog. i like my drinks how i like my man
it’s the pits. i like my snacks like my drinks and my man
what happened to bobby fischer?
hey, um, you left your broom down at the courthouse. were you sweeping up justice?
and the best part of the week: mike and i had not one but TWO date nights this week. shuhhup! yah we did! and i got a lady date so i’ve barely had to be a parent this week.
so we went for drinks at betty’s and then dined at rigsby’s where we made lots of sexy looks at each other like this
and come hither looks like this
sorry about the lighting in these but it was one of those way too sensual for lights kinda places.
that’s what i captured for posterity. looking forward to more weeks like this one.
dear salty internet friends,
oh yeah. i know you’re salty, too. mike’s back but the weekly updates won’t stop. smiles!
somethings that need to be said about life now that mike is back:
i spend my more self righteous moments making claims that i hold my family together by taking darla on single-handedly while mike is away. the reality that i love and abhor to admit is that i’m barely half the equation. the things mike does for this family are amazing. AND he does it without a thought of recognition. i, on the other hand, always want to hear my praises sung from the castle tops. reminder: i’m self centered. he’s gone for 3 months, works 12+ hour days when he is on tour and then comes back home to us and ALWAYS jumps back in without missing a step, like he’s never been gone.
if we switched places i would probably get a divan from rent-a-center for my first week home and place it right in the center of our most used room. i’d then commence with a big theatrical performance of how hard a transition it is. i’d repose on that divan all week sighing and squinting a lot. and my hand would probably be draped across my forehead 93% of the time. i’d also be wearing a hoop skirt just because… anyways, that’s the difference between us and that’s why we’re best suited for our current roles.
with that being said, i have to do the public acknowledgement thing again and say thank you to my husband for his help around the house. you have no idea how much it means to me to have a partner running this house.
i recently used the analogy of the wizard of oz to describe how mike being home revolutionizes my world. it can not even be described as a 180. he picks me up and sets me down in a completely different land when he returns. his twister blows in and stirs things up, carries us away, and then we eventually settle into a life routine that is really beautiful, vivid and full of adventures. yes, he is a storm. i mean, having a third body and mind in the house is a lot to recalibrate. more ideas and thoughts to be listened to. another body to be danced around. and oh the syncopation of the bathroom schedules. ladies, you understand? sharing a bathroom with a boy….ewwwww! but i’ll take it!!!!!
i’ll leave you with a few pics and then one last thought. more pics from our week will be added later. running a busy life means less time to blog about busy life.
some of my favorite pics of the week
i feel like sharing this thought:
there’s a big focus and push to continuously make life easier in our culture. i’ve learned that it’s the times when life is hard, so difficult that you don’t know if you can go on any longer, when your life has spun so far out of control that all you can do is dance in the eye of the storm – those times are the most important. those are the times you can’t afford to miss. those times are the living, breathing, oozing, pulsating elements. because even if you fuck it all up today the sun will still rise tomorrow. live for the hard times.
a little silliness
from our coffee house breakfast this morning
cinnamon french toast for $2 why has it taken us 2 years to come here!!!??? I DON’T KNOW! but at fifteen bucks for the whole family to make a fast break, i predict we’ll be returning. tomorrow. we dug these paper placemats. good for child and adult distraction.
