dear salty sailor,

when i was a little lassie i would always try to go to bed early before an upcoming, exciting day. i knew that the hours would pass quickly as i slept and said excitement would be here before i could say “a la peanut butter sandwiches.”  this practice would then result in me lying awake, agonzing because i could not, in fact, fall asleep. i would then doze off sometime in the wee hours of the morning only to then wake up late and miss a good chunk of the day i was so looking forward to.

this is basically what is happening as i type.

i’m so over the moon to see you that i can’t seem to settle. and i’m also really bummed because i was all about getting in one last night of diagonal sleeping. a full night. i was gonna use every glorious hour to sleep on every inch of this bed….but nope. i just can’t wait till you’re over there on your side and i’m doing things like poking you in the side so you’ll stop snoring but pretending to be asleep when you are startled. tee he he he.

i’m listening to the band right now and it’s occurred to me that i haven’t been able to properly mourn the death of mr. helm without you. we’re going to have to have a night soon, very soon, dedicated to just that. for some reason, i do need to mourn him but i can’t do it without you. it wouldn’t be proper. not at all.

looking forward to all the things were going to do together, practical and im, starting in just a little over 12 hours.

love,

wife

Project Iron Thighz

project iron thighz has been in full effect this week with some pretty good success. the first being that we rode it some every single day, even if it was just down to the gym and back. the second being i found our bike path to downtown, along the olentangy and to the scioto mile. i also found how to get to whetsone. as soon as i’m conditioned to make it that far we’re going to ride just about everywhere on two wheels. the third being i haven’t picked up groceries in the car since we got RuJu. our time in the car has greatly decreased. and lastly, a couple women who work at our gym asked me to email them pics and info about our bike set-up so they could get something similar for themselves.

excuse me, elaine. do you brag much?

errr sorry.

look, i don’t mean to brag it’s just that this week really knocked me back on my heels and i need to celebrate any small victory i had so please, forgive me this one brag sesh.

what’s in store

i took darla to her first in store last night to see Dawn Landes at our fave little record shop.  well, let me just give you a shot of the before performance and then i’ll let you all guess how it went:

IMG_2779

that’s her second of three cookies – b/c you have to give her all 3 when she marches up to the cookie table and puts her hand on all of them – jones soda not pictured.

all in all, the little lady was a big hit, but the sugar did get ‘er good and i ended up slipping out the back after about the 5th or 6th song. i don’t know which one, i wasn’t able to keep track and that’s why i knew it wasn’t worth hanging around. i wasn’t able to pay attention to Dawn and neither was anyone else.

but at least we tried it.

Ms. Landes made it about 2 steps in the door before darla ran to greet her and talk tamborine.

we got a spot up close at first. darla sat down during the sound check so i thought for a minute that this was gonna be all breezy. but as soon as dawn started strumming darla was on her feet dancing and twirling. it was downright adorable for about 2 1/2 songs. then i decided i needed to migrate her towards the back so that the woman everyone was there to see would be the rightful recipient of all the attention in the room.

well, about 2 minutes of being in the back and darla clung to some guy’s leg and wouldn’t let go for 2 songs. she was a human dryer sheet. can’t say that i blame her because he was pretty easy on the eyes, but that’s when i knew it was time to leave everyone to peacefully ingest the sounds of miss landes music.  AND teach darla the womanly ways of making the guy come to you on our way back out to the car.

it was a pretty big disappointment to have to miss out on the rest of her show. i really liked what i did manage to hear. good thing we have her album.

i’m still pretty glad we went.

con mis amigos?

i remember being alone for new year’s eve in 2008. i was expecting darla. i somehow woke up just at 11:58 to see a post-stroke dick clark ring in the new year and felt so terribly alone when i really needed someone most. i remember listening to all the parties of people banging their pots and pans on the night Obama won the election. i knew all my friends were together, but no one had invited me. i remember spending our first new year’s here in columbus by myself. i think i just went to bed. i remember driving around last year for the 4th of july just trying to find somewhere to go that didn’t make me feel so damn desperately alone. we drove past picnics of people who have probably known each other for years. i was alone for st. patricks day. i am alone now on cinco de mayo.

i’m tired of being alone. i’m tired of being lonely.

if i threw a pity party, would you come?
