weekending

the majority of our weekend was just some one on one time. that’s ok because we did lots of gnarly adventures, mainly breaking in Madame RuJu. here’s some of it:

using the swings in new ways

running to dinner in a light shower and entertaining other patrons with a costumed dance number

“planting” flowers at the park for her grandmas

climbing rocks and taking hikes

now, our biggest victory of the weekend was discovering an amazing bakery by our house. it’s so amazing that i am going to be selfish and not reveal the name or location. ok, i won’t do that. we stopped into the french loaf for the first time and WOW. just wow. go there. you’ll see what i mean.

one year

speaking of being present when babies are born, my special little girlfriend turned one and we made it back to columbus just in time to celebrate.

i think darla and adam were the only 2 people in the room that didn’t have their eyes on Joni. they look pretty intent on that cake, huh? i hope when these three are older the memories will resemble this picture. the three of them together. as they should be.

this is my second family (plus two unpictured VIPs) and i don’t know what i would do without them. wruckers love burkeybuns for life.

matchy matchy

darla and i have been kicking around in our matching toms all weekend. is this too much? well, i don’t care. we’re going to wear matching outfits until she’s 18 and she can just learn to deal with it. i love matching.

Root Children Visit

the root children left some nice goodies for darla to welcome spring

root children

They brought her: flower seeds, ruth heller coloring books, Richard Doyle’s Fairyland Coloring Book, The Flowers’ Festival by Elsa Beskow, a tank dress for warm weather by theifandbandit, and new Salt Water Sandals for her first trip to the pacific.

i think she was most fond of the sandals. she wanted to wear dress and shoes immediately and wanted to plant her seeds immediately too. i understand all those things. momma’s the same way. she ran outside and shouted “thank you root children!” first thing after she donned both items.

happy spring everyone!

Good green

we hope your weekend and St. Patrick’s day celebrations have gotten off to a good start. Darla and I have enjoyed a morning of arting and reading out on the porch, in our green of course. we’re going to fill the rest of our day with bike rides, park picnics and errands. yeah. now that this weather is here it has to stay. no going back on this gift indian weather giver. i’m hoping for a nap later as well.

because…

i have a birthday party to attend for a friend tonight. adult things! adult time! adult conversations! i’m pretty excited, if you can’t tell. i even painted my nails for it. oooo la la.

a list

a list of darla’s talents and skills that she shares with her mother:

constantly trying to wear as little clothing as possible

spinning in circles

asking for snacks to be brought to her on the couch

running into things

wanting what everyone else has

talking to anyone

sleeping diagonally on the bed

holding her hand out to let the wind rush through her fingers when the car window is down

*i especially love the last one, for both of us.

friday smiles

we’re finishing up a very good week here and looking forward to an equally good weekend. some things that have made me smile around here today:

our flowers of the week darla picked out

IMG_2108

watching darla excitedly tear open her invitation to be a flower girl in cousin’s wedding. she’s pretty jazzed.

IMG_2107watching a girl figure out things for herself successfully.

IMG_2109

finally getting around to baking this super easy bread. mixed, proofed and baked all in one pot. sooo delicious.

IMG_2111

playing dumb so darla can have the joy of the “see food” joke multiple times over.

IMG_2110

seeing a practical joke gift received well and messages from friends :)

i’m also thankful for about 4 going on 5 hours of the girl being happy to play and occupy herself while i sort through summer plans, bills and responsibilities that have been neglected. maybe this is my reward for putting aside my duties and crying my way through The Rescuers with her last night.

but mostly i’m smiling about the concert tickets purchase, the friends we’ll be festivaling with, and the family with which i get to spend traveling around this country for one crazy upcoming summer.

F-R-I-D-A-Y! WHAT’S THAT SPELL? FRIDAY!!! commence banging on the side of the bus.

non-existent day

leap day was an excellent day around our household. easy going morning, fun-filled afternoon with friends and dinner with our neighbors. pretty phenomenal.

we went with the burkeybuns crew over to Krema peanut butter factory for sandwiches and shakes. i told darla that since today doesn’t exist it wouldn’t count against our lenten promises. we might have partook in some sweets. but not too bad. here’s darla yelling “jelly!” in my face.

have you noticed that i get a lot of things yelled in my face. eh.

IMG_2093

and then on to hours spent outside playing in the park. it was just the loveliest day. thank you leap day. thank you for what your carefree aura brought to our lives today.
