i’m finally recovered from halloween out-and-abouting. i gotta say that it seemed like it was all hard work for mom and no payoff until the kiddies really got into it. AND now i get to type with one hand while the other feeds a snickers to my belly!
these first few are taken at my mom and dad’s. we came straight from the HOOT film series to my parents so darla rode 3 hours in her costume. it didn’t look too worse for the wear.
she’s a tightrope walker. see those balancing skills! maybe? inspired by this post and accepted by me as a cosmic sign from the universe b/c my favorite band in the whole entire universe has a song titled “tightrope.”
watch it!
sooooo good. ahhh, i used to say that if they invent time machines or portals that i would want to go back to woodstock but these yeasayer vincent moon sessions are really in the running. why wasn’t i in that apartment that night!!! gaaarrrrrr!!!!!!
but i digress. back to the pics of mi amor.
so, action shots were hard to get that night. we went around with the burkeybuns crew (minus working momma = sadness) and this was all i got. oh, and a boatload of candy.

adam went as paul from sgt. pepper’s lonely hearts club band and his costume was outta sight! he and darla were somewhat coordinated but you couldn’t tell through the overcoats and pieces of costume falling off all the time and kids never in the same spot for longer than 2.35 seconds. i, me, myself personally, went as a flower garden. to achieve this i put on every piece of floral patterned clothing i own and stole darla’s flower headband. it really ended up looking more like a bag lady getup. other moms were not impressed.
in short, it was fun. i think i’d do it again. maybe in about a year.
when i was a little girl my dad had an old knit hat he called his “weekender” that he would wear around the yard while working and doing chores. i would tag along “helping” with some chores which pretty much consisted of me picking up all the tiny sticks all over the yard. well, now it’s darla’s turn to be the stick-picker-upper. this past one was definitely a “weekender” weekend, reminding me of saturdays and sundays long gone.
here’s our indiana-ing.

feeding the birdies with grandpa
our marshmallow ghosts. can you tell which ones darla did?

repurposing an old toilet paper roll as a peanut butter bird feeder
i didn’t take any pics of our wilderness trek but that was kinda the point. to just get back to investigating nature. we found a huge beaver dam! i haven’t seen one since i was a little girl. i love having those moments with my little girl. grandpa came too and he was able to pass on more information than mommy. he’s the real wilderness expert. i’m just a fake. other than that trek my favorite part of the weekend was right here:
i love sitting next to a fire, indoor or outdoor. especially with a cup of coffee with chocolate milk, bailey’s and whipped cream. or with a hocher schorr weiss.
i’ll try to get pics of our trick or treating up later today or early tomorrow. i know you are looking for them, hubster.
this is pierre. he is the finest artist in all of Pumpkingdom. unfortunately, he is french and is ambivalent towards halloween.
darla has been not-so-silently coveting our neighbors painted pumpkins these past two weeks so i broke out the acrylics on friday evening for a porch pumpkin painting party.
we’ve been reading spooky books and poems by candlelight. i thought i’d share my favorite fall poem, by james whitcomb riley, with everyone before we take off for hoosier heartland.
WHEN THE FROST IS ON THE PUNKIN
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and the gobble of the struttin’ turkey-cock,
And the clackin’; of the guineys and the cluckin’ of the hens
And the rooster’s hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O it’s then the times a feller is a-feelin’ at his best,
With the risin’ sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock
They’s somethin kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here –
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees;
But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny monring of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock –
When the frost is on the punkin and fodder’s in the shock.
The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin’ of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries – kindo’ lonesome-like, but still
A preachin’ sermons to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below – the clover overhead! –
O, it sets my hart a-clickin’ like the tickin’ of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!
Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin’s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too!
I don’t know how to tell it – but if sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin’ boardin’, and they’d call around on me –
I’d want to ‘commodate ’em – all the whole-indurin’ flock –
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock!
hello love,
really exhausted. all is well. happy. busy. busy. busy. beautiful outdoor days. need you to come home. soon. can’t wait. love.
took darla to the pet store and movies for an M day. we saw cars 2. played air hockey in the arcade and took our pictures in the photo booth.
darla’s attempt at tracing the letter m on the chalkboard
posting and receiving mail. thanks aunt marti! darla loves the bat and book and has dubbed the bat “freddie the fruit bat.”
well, um, she found this and put it on during laundry day and proceeded to reenact the scene from goonies in which brand stretches his exercise equipment and then gets tied up by the other boys. she’s a goonie.

running the bases with burkeybuns. you can’t see it that well but i wrote D + A = ? in the sand. i’m sure you can figure out why.
she’s really just the best. my heart on two legs. yep, my heart has two legs, two arms, one adorable face and an incredibly loud mouth.
she’s still climbing stuff like a good snuggle monkey outta
we found that missing panda from zanesville. is that too inappropriate?
these last three are from our beautiful little lunch spot in the park. just can not get enough of this autumn afternoon sun.
that’s our week thus far. plus some other things like bike rides, a trip to cosi and library and a burkeybuns dinner/sleepover hangout. now we’re getting geared up for various halloween activities and a trip to good ol’ indiana. darla is very excited about her halloween costume and i can’t wait to show you some cute pics. i wanted to send these pics off to you before i add another fifty from this weekend.
sending you lots of love vibes. really just can not wait for you to be a part of this fun frenzy again.
wifey
the weather made a liar out of me yesterday. it turned sunny and warm abruptly. after darla had paraded around the house making messes and climbing every piece of furniture we own, just enough to make me truly, truly afraid of those upcoming housebound months, i pulled the trigger and got us on a bike ride. we had a picnic lunch over the river and spent some time examining driftwood.
this tree stump was by far the coolest find.
so yesterday was a practice of patience, adaptation, and finding the beauty in all this rain. these past few months have really made me skittish about getting started on schooling. it’s days like yesterday that set my wheels spinning about homeschooling or unschooling. darla is not going to get these kind of hands on learning opportunities sitting in a classroom. i really have no idea what path to choose. for right now, i just have to be thankful for the time i’ve had thus far to be her educator, her full time parent, a stay at home mom.
today is back to cold and wet, by the way.
