i hope you all had a refreshing, fulfilling weekend as well.

good vibes to you for a great start to your week.

we knew you were coming so we baked a cake

on friday we all waited anxiously for our new nephew -newphew- to make his appearance in the world. to celebrate, i helped big sis and big cousin bake a birthday cake for our newest member of the family. lots of spatula licking ensued:

and there’s the finished product. big sis got to pick out the cake mix, frosting and all the trimmings. i really enjoyed involving the girls this way and reminding them of another benefit of new siblings/cousins – another day of the year that you get to eat cake.

weeksie

here’s just a little looksie at our weeksie for your friday viewing. our fun and enjoyment were in the small things this week. baking. swinging. movies. bundled up bike rides to school. fro yo. reading pallet moved indoors. green bean delivery.

very thankful for the small things in life that add up to so much love.

now go have a weekend. you’ve earned it.

wearing awareness

it’s international babywearing week and while i no longer have a baby to wear around – don’t even get me started – i thought i would still share some info and experience from our almost 2 years of babywearing.

my two favorite photos from our babywearing days speak for themselves as to why i loved toting darla around

i can still connect myself to the feeling of carrying her, snuggled up next to me, for so many months. i’m hoping i’ll be able to tap into that as the years go on, as time turns me into an old lady.

we used the maya wrap ring sling most of her first year and our ergo thereafter until it was stolen. you can tell how wounded i am about this incident by the number of times i’ve brought it up on here.

i found wearing darla to be so much easier than dealing with a stroller. this may be because we were dealing with mostly cityscapes i.e. cracked and crowded sidewalks, tight spaced restaurants and stores, mass transportation. don’t misunderstand, we relied on both but it was so nice to have a comfortable alternative.

the Maya Wrap Baby Sling aided my breastfeeding relationship as well. darla was close to breast and i didn’t have to worry about carrying around a separate nursing cloth to cover up. the wrap has ample fabric at the end that could easily be pulled over to cover any exposure.

one of my favorite accomplishments with the sling was laundry time. yes, i know. lamesville. but when mike is out to sea chores fall solely on momma. laundry posed the biggest problem in our 7 floor building. i tried all combinations of shoving laundry in various places in the stroller and wheeling it all down, none of it working out very well. that is until it donned on me to just wear darla down and i could carry everything just as i had before. our laundry bag even had enough slack in the pull tie that i could hang it over the opened laundry door to transfer clothes. once a woman who had been in and out of the laundry room at the same time as i came over and commented that she was marveled by my system, that i seemed to be more efficient than she was and i had another human strapped to me to boot.

in short, babywearing helped me tackle the tasks that can sometimes seem so daunting when you have a little one. especially during times when kiddos are feeling under the weather but chores and errands still have to be accomplished.

once darla was older we switched to the ERGObaby Baby Carrier because it seemed a little more comfortable with her new, larger frame. we attended a 3 day music festival when darla was 16 mos old and she spent hours on end nestled on my back or front, napping, eating, enjoying the music while we danced together.

aaaand when i look back through our pics of babywearing days i notice that it oftentimes left my hands free for holding a nice frosty beverage. soooo, there’s that benefit.

i guess it’s time to wrap it up now that i’ve gone and opened up the drinking and momming can-o’-worms but i just want to express how much i love babywearing. i think it offers families the opportunity to bring their little ones along in their lives in a more involved way. baby is close and a part of the action. i know there are trips, ball games, concerts, parties and many various other activities we wouldn’t have been able to enjoy without that option. i’ve also done my fair share of babywearing while nannying. there are many benefits to being able to chase after kiddo number one while kiddo number two rides along for the chase.

if you’re interested in babywearing shop around. collect your info. all carriers are different. if something doesn’t work, try something else. lots of shops let you try carriers on in store so you can find which one is most comfortable for you.

first field trip

our first field trip with darla’s school was more like a patch trip, pumpkin patch that is.

on monday, darla’s school arranged a visit to nearby Circle S Farm. i was pretty impressed by their set up. lots for the kiddos to enjoy and learn from. and they enjoyed it for sure. and how. let’s have a looksie, shall we?

the first thing that made the day special was getting to hang with darla’s friend kaden and the second thing was the pumpkin donuts. yum. YUM!

birth matterz

i’m helping another wonderful mama and papa bring their little one into the world today. I’m feeling so incredibly thankful and excited.

in honor of this event, i wanted to share a few birth related items i’ve come across this week.

I found two interesting articles on Marvelous Kiddo:

the first is an article from science daily about new research findings in regards to limits of gestation length in humans. it’s long been theorized that cephalo-pelvic relations (i.e. baby’s head size in comparison to mom’s pelvis) contributed to the end of the mother’s pregnancy term. new evidence shows the end of gestation has more to do with metabolic rate. full article here.

the second article is about Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a delightful hormone that plays a big part in labor and birth, and a whole lot more in life for that matter. Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions. It also helps mom get an endorphin rush post contraction helping mom cope with labor pain AND oxytocin helps establish momma + baby bond immediately after birth. what a wonderful little hormone! Pitocin is the synthetic form of oxytocin that is sometimes administered during labor to start and/or strengthen contractions. Beware – evidence shows the brain doesn’t react to pitocin the same way as oxytocin naturally occurring in the body. mom may not get the beneficial endorphin rush post contraction and it can make contractions longer and stronger than would be in natural labor. full article here.

and i saved my favorite for last. I snagged this study summary from Mary Catherine Hamelin Birth + Family Arts. The study shows evidence that 100% of women benefit from supported birth:

Overall, women who received continuous labor support were less likely to experience:
•    Epidural or other regional analgesia •    Any analgesia/anesthesia, including epidurals and opioids •    Birth with vacuum extraction or forceps •    Birth by cesarean •    Dissatisfaction or a negative rating of their experience. The authors concluded that all women should have support throughout labor and birth.

the last two lines are the most important. it doesn’t matter your chosen method of birthing your baby, it matters how satisfied you are with your experience. doulas help give mom the optimal emotional support to compliment their optimal medical support. think of what our maternity care system could be like if we had a doula for every mother.

this article is from the site childbirthconnection.org. this site is packed full of information. any expecting parents should check it out!

hope you enjoyed this influx of birth information. looking forward to sharing more info and experience as time goes on.

100 thingz

whenever i feel that my household has become unmanageable i know it’s time to get rid of some stuff.

schtuff.

yesterday i took on a 100 things project. I gave away 100 things in one day.

granted this is not hard to do when you have a small child. small articles of clothing and small no-longer-played-with toys easily add up. still, it was 100 less things i have to sort, fold, pick up, organize and step on.

here’s my nice little give away pile:

Photobucket

i normally just haul the stuff to the goodwill but i’m thinking about a stuff swap party in the future. anyone want to set a date and join me? i’m thinking this might be a good alternative to buying kiddos all new toys for christmas. maybe just trade ’em up.

if you decide to take on the 100 things in one day give away please post and share your pics on MomJeanz page.

cheers to a simpler, more manageable household.
