YAY FOR HUMIDITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when we took the girls to the beach i pointed out to the pacific and said “hey Darla, that’s the pacific ocean. Do you know who’s out there right now?” and she said “yep, Daddy! he’s sailing on the pacific ocean.” then she got quiet for a minute. She turned to me and had a single tear running down her cheek. She meekly said “mommy, i’m crying because i miss my daddy SO much.” it broke my heart. i was fighting back tears as i reminded her that i miss you, too, and we will all be together again soon.
since then there has been a lot of daddy talk. a lot of misses. a lot more vocalization about your absence. for example: we sent a flower into a fountain at UCLA yesterday because supposedly you are at the other end of that fountain.
i think this increase may be because we’re around cory, elsa and meg again. i think cory reminds her of her own daddy. it’s just another reason why we are so lucky to have them in our lives. please know that even though we wrucker girls can be busy, trucking through these months without you, maybe even pretending that we don’t think of you as often as we do just so it won’t hurt as much, we are missing you. you are in our thoughts. even in the littlest one’s.
“I” driven learning:
darla chose I for this week. i lucked out again since both st. patrick’s day and the ides of march fell during our time frame. well, the weeks are getting pretty sloppy and i think this might have been 8 days but whatevs.
ice was also a very versatile subject for us. we did our ice cream visit to jeni’s, made ice cubes with food coloring – an idea from jamie – and talked about ice in the arctic as it relates to polar bears. we saw the polar bears at the zoo and scoped them out a bit more in friends’ magazine. darla is pretty distressed by the fact that the polar ice caps are melting and the polar bear population is declining.
mike has been sailing around the south pacific islands so we looked all those up on the globe and then darla drew a picture of her “dream island” which she said didn’t really consist of anything besides pink trees.
for the ides of march i tried to get the kids to say “et tu, brute” to each other all day but do you know what 3 year olds don’t like to speak? Latin.
and of course the st. patrick’s day celebration was lots of fun and useful. we learned about ireland, watched the secret of kells, had irish inspired snacks i.e. irish cheddar – lazy mom – and we made four leaf clovers. i asked her to list four things she felt lucky to have in her life and her list is as follows: lipstick, crayons, glow worms, and her bunny. hmmm. her lipstick is actually chapstick and the bunny, incidentally, is not even hers. i may have to do a more thorough job of teaching her our blessings. for mine i listed family, friends, health and music. she made me write her name out underneath family because she proclaimed she needed her own spot. quite right, but i did point out to her that i didn’t even place above glow worms in her heart. such is the life of a mom.
darla is with her grandparents this weekend so i’m going to take the opportunity to recharge and come back with more dedication to education this upcoming week. we did start on G today – she picked it out but universe helped me with the start of gymnastics today and her visit to grandparents.
incorporate this fashion into my momming? hmmm.
i’ll let you know if i ever figure it out.

i’d like to share a blog post from our friend chris from the day we met up with them at kingdom of bounce. i really love his blog. his daughter even has her own art blog too! so thankful for new friends.
i don’t really know where to begin. so i guess we’ll start with the basics:
you are gone. i am here. i am lonely. i’m missing you. darla is here. she makes me happy. she also makes me want to stick my head under water. she misses you. she doesn’t miss you. she’s fickle. she’s three.
that about covers it.
bye!
i kid. i kid.
i’m sitting here next to a little girl who fell asleep watching The Triplets of Belleville. I’m happy to say she adores the movie and it’s gotten me a’thaynkin’: we should keep The Illusionist in mind as a present for some occasion. i’d love to have it in the library for her since it was the first movie she saw in the theater. we’re still pretending we didn’t take her to see Bruno, right?
life threw me some curveballs this week but i’m happy to say things are all working out. all is continuing to be very steady and even keel. i know this should be a good thing but you know me; i’m getting antsy.
luckily i have all our summer travel planning to keep me busy. it is going to be great. this summer just ain’t gonna stop. i have high hopes for some memory making with Darla. it’s amazing to me some of the stuff she pulls out of her memory now that she can convey it to me. i’m afraid the girl remembers more than we counted on. you’re going to have to re-hide your candyland stash of money.
we received our valentine’s from you yesterday in the mail and it made my heartache. i think one of the really good things about you being gone is we get to connect through our writing again. i think it’s one of the reasons we fell in love. i certainly was floored by your way with words and still am. i’m very thankful you are able to email this work tour. i’m hoping it will keep us close this time around.
also, i’m sorry about that michael landon thing. you’re right. he did have big ears.
you have perfect ears and i love you,
wife
some more pics from that one weekend i keep sharing. i would like to state that these moments were a lot less awkward than they came across on film. darla was happy that she and fruncle james were dressed as “samesies” for our holiday photo shoot:
she’s a very lucky girl to have so many great fraunties and fruncles who will pose for awkward family photos with her. what more could a girl ask?
i was just going to do a short one photo for each month but then i realized i don’t have any pics for march & april on my computer and i love so many of the pics of last year i’m just throwing them in one post. enjoy our year!

looking back on photos of this year i realize two things: the first being i did a damn fine job on darla’s wardrobe and the second being what a simply glorious, crazy good life we have. very thankful for all my days on this wonderful planet with a spicy girl and a salty sailor.
i’m hoping that this is our best year yet. mostly because the mayans say it’s the last sooooo i’d like to go out with a bang. hope you enjoyed this mostly repeats visual wrap up of the year.
I’ve been a little quiet over here bc we’ve been elbow deep in packing supplies. We’re getting down to just the big stuff as small piles like this one are disappearing. I’m really looking forward to the new house and sharing our new abode once we’re settled in.
Painting projects are already underway. I’m doing the inside of our kitchen cabinets a bright red. We chose the color based on name alone:
That’s right. LA FONDA FIREBERRY!!! And it’s an approved color by the national preservation historical society or whatevs. Bonus! I think I’ll just start referring to the whole kitchen as La Fonda.
Hopefully I’ll be back on track in a few days for I feel we still have much to share from the holidaze.
